What Is Sedation Dentistry

There are many options for the types of sedation dentistry we offer. What we think is best for you, will depend on the extent of the dental work that needs to be done. Three of our more popular sedations are:

  • 1
Oral sedation in the form of a pill. It is the most common and lowest level of sedation. It is used primarily for patients who avoid needles or are slightly anxious about getting dental work performed. The pill is typically taken the night prior to your visit to help you sleep, with another approximately one hour before your visit.
  • 2
Nitrous Oxide is another sedation therapy that is popular because it is easy to administer. It has been around for many years. Some of us know it as “laughing gas.” If you select using nitrous oxide, we simply place a mask over your mouth and nose so the gas may be inhaled. We will adjust the levels accordingly to your anxiety level. This sedation is often recommended because once the work is complete, we replace the gas with 100% oxygen. Within minutes, the sedation has dissipated, and you will be good to go.
  • 3
Intravenous Conscious Sedation is typically only used on patients that are undergoing extreme dental work that takes longer to complete than most procedures. We use it on our patients who are exceedingly anxious. You will be conscious throughout the treatment but won’t remember anything about the work performed.
